Organic coconut oil candles: For lighting a clean path
Candles are useful for more than just ambiance. They’re mood-setting tools that can also impact your health. However, store-bought candles often contain harmful paraffin wax (a petroleum byproduct) and synthetic fragrances.
Fortunately, you can make a safer alternative at home. Organic
coconut oil candles are a cleaner natural alternative that burns toxin-free and are great for home use or for gifting during the holidays.
Coconut oil lowers the melting point of beeswax, creating a candle that emits a warm glow with a longer burn time. Its clean-burning nature also reduces soot and smoke. And if you like candles with a subtle fragrance, you can add your favorite essential oils to your homemade coconut oil candle. (Related:

Scented DIY candles
Ingredients:
- 1 lb beeswax (Use pellets or grated beeswax for easier melting)
- 1/2 cup organic coconut oil (Use raw, unrefined coconut oil for purity)
- 30 drops of essential oil (Optional, use your favorite scent/s)
Tools:
- Double boiler (Alternatively, you can use a heat-safe bowl over a pot)
- Glass jars or candle tins
- Candle wicks
- Wick holders (Or clothespins)
- Tape or hot glue (For securing the candle wicks)
Instructions:
- Get the double boiler and combine the melted beeswax and coconut oil. Stir occasionally until the two are fully melted.
- Place the candle wicks in the center of each jar. Secure the base with tape or some hot glue. Use a clothespin or chopstick to hold the top of the candle wick upright and centered.
- When the wax mixture is fully melted, carefully remove it from the heat and add 30 drops of your chosen essential oil.
- Carefully pour the candle mixture into the jars. Leave at least half an inch of space at the top of the containers.
- Set the candles aside. Let them cool and harden for at least one hour. Once the candles are set, trim the wick to about half an inch.
Whipped body butter: A luxurious treat without the luxe price
You often see body butters on store shelves that boast "natural" labels, but homemade versions are free of harmful synthetic preservatives and water dilution.
Organic coconut oil’s occlusive properties lock in moisture, making it perfect for creating a thick, luxurious balm that hydrates and soothes dry skin. Additionally, its
medium-chain triglycerides penetrate the skin quickly, delivering hydration without the greasiness.
DIY moisturizing body butter
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (3.4 oz) shea butter
- 1/2 cup (2.1 oz) cocoa butter
- 1/2 cup organic coconut oil (You can also use almond oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, olive oil or sunflower seed oil)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (Or arrowroot starch or tapioca starch)
- 10 - 30 drops essential oil (Optional, add your preferred essential oil)
Tools:
- Double boiler (Alternatively, a heat-safe bowl over a pot)
- Spatula
Instructions:
- Use a double boiler or place a heatproof bowl on top of a pot filled with several inches of simmering water. The bowl shouldn't touch the water. Add the cocoa butter, shea butter and your preferred oil to the bowl.
- Carefully melt all the ingredients together. Use a spatula to stir the mixture.
- Once all the ingredients are melted, remove the bowl from the heat. Refrigerate the bowl for about 45 to 60 minutes or until cool.
- The oils have chilled long enough when the oils around the edges of the bowl are solid but are still a little melted in the middle.
- Prepare another bowl and add the starch and the essential oil. Start with 10 drops of essential oil, and add more if you prefer a stronger scent. Use a whisk, hand mixer or stand mixer to whip the body butter until it is fluffy and lightens in color.
- Pour the body butter into a sealable jar. The body butter can be stored at room temperature, but if it's too hot, you should store it in the fridge because it can melt at about 90 F (32 C). The body butter should keep for at least one year.
For best results, apply the body butter after showering. Let the body butter absorb into your skin for a few minutes before getting dressed.
Nourishing lip balm: Bye-bye chapped lips
Commercial lip balms often use petrolatum (mineral oil) to "lock in" moisture, which creates a breathable barrier.
Organic coconut oil, however, is a natural humectant that attracts and retains moisture, preventing lips from drying out.
DIY moisturizing lip balm
Ingredients:
- 3 Tablespoons (1.38 ounces) organic coconut oil (virgin or expeller pressed)
- 2 Tablespoons (1 ounce) beeswax pastilles (or use carnauba wax )
- 1 Tablespoon (.48 ounces) sweet almond oil (You can also use jojoba oil, olive oil or avocado oil instead of almond oil)
- 20 drops of essential oil (Optional, you can use your preferred essential oil)
- 1/2 Teaspoon honey (Optional)
Tools:
- Double boiler (Alternatively, a heat-safe bowl over a pot)
- 8 to 10 tubes of empty lip balm containers or lip balm tins
- Rubber bands
- Whisk
- Funnel
Instructions:
- Remove the lids from the lip balm tubes. Use the rubber bands to secure all the tubes upright.
- Measure the coconut oil, sweet almond oil and beeswax, then pour them into a double boiler pot.
- Turn the heat on low-medium, then let the oils and wax melt completely.
- Carefully remove the pan from the heat and stir in the raw honey (if using). Add your favorite essential oils.
- Slowly pour the mixture into the upright tubes.
- Set the lip balm tubes aside and let them cool. Once done, cap the containers.
This recipe should fill about eight to 12 lip balm tubes.
